Thing 21- Cellphone apps

What can your phone do for you? Can you surf the internet in search of movie times, weather updates, and answers? Do you have gps capabilities? Can you check and reply to your constant barrage of emails? Update facebook? Download music, movies and books? Start a document that can be uploaded to your computer later? Blog on the go? Entertain yourself for hours??? If not, then I'll assume you don't have a smart phone. Well, maybe we should just call them mini-computers. Phones today are so powerful they may well one day replace mp3 players, calculators, gps systems, ebook readers, alarm clocks, portable dvd players, even- dare I suggest?- laptops! Web 2.0 plays a big part in the future of our phones. Cellphone apps are HUGE. But it's the people who write the apps that are making the web 2.0 world go round. Updates are available to you immediately. Users write and rewrite them constantly. That's Web 2.0 baby!

Your assignment for this Thing is to use the links below and download an app for your phone if you have a smart phone. If you don't, try the Text messaging links at the bottom. You officially have permission to play around with your phone for hours.

*iPhone- go to itunes and add something new.

Search for apps for your phone at:
Smartphone.net - Look for "Add Device" button under the gray box that says Current Device. Watch out- these aren't free!
Download Range - definitely has Nokia, LG, and Sony Erickson phones, but I'm not sure what else.
Phoload -  Seems very user friendly and all free, but no Blackberry, so I couldn't really try it out for you!
FreeSite - Just links to a bunch of other sites. Don't go here unless you can't find stuff for your phone anywhere else.

Hopefully you can find your phone model at one of these sites and find an app or two that will download for you!
Text messaging
Sometimes you need to send a text, but your phone is dying or you left it at home or you just maxed out your limit for free text messages or something. Or maybe you don't even have texting capabilities! Well, here's a possible solution for you. Use the web. Use the link above to go to a site that you could bookmark and go to anytime. The great thing about that site is that you enter your email address for replies! Very smart.
One site, Text4free.net, has a tool you can download, although it is, ironically, not free. However, another option is to get the code to put a text sending application on your blog or website. Try it out below and see how it works for you! One drawback of this site is that you need to know the cellphone number and the service provider.
